Conductor – Ian Roberts

Ian started his musical life as a chorister at Chester Cathedral. He read music at the University of East Anglia and concurrently held a choral scholarship at Norwich Cathedral. Following this, he embarked on a year’ s organ scholarship at Blackburn Cathedral and in 2002 became Organ Scholar at Chichester Cathedral.

Then in September 2003, Ian returned to Chester to take up the post of 2nd Assistant Organist. In 2008 he became Assistant Director of Music, in this capacity he accompanies The Cathedral Choir which he also conducts twice weekly and reglarly takes part in the Thursday organ recital series.

An important part of Ian’s work at Chester is his directorship of the Cathedral Nave Choir. In this capacity he prepares the choir for weekly services and special events. He has been responsible for arranging an annual Cathedral Nave Choir concert and this has proved to be very successful. He is committed to achieving the highest possible standard of music making with the choir at the some time as fostering an ethos based on fun and friendship.

Ian has accompanied cathedral choirs on tours of Italy and Germany and has also given two solo recitals in Germany. He has played for the Chester Cathedral choristers on the BBC Radio 3 Choral Evensong, BBC Radio 4 Daily Service and on Christmas day for the live broadcast from Chester Cathedral on BBC1. He has accompanied the girls and men of The Cathedral Choir on the recent CD recording ‘ Sing for Joy volume 4′. He is an Associate of the Royal College of Organists and has lessons with David Sanger.
